Jeff Bezos Is Catching Up to a Tax Plan I Proposed a Year Ago
This week Jeff Bezos went on CNBC and called for eliminating federal income tax for the bottom half of American earners. He pointed to a nurse making $75,000 a year and asked why she should be sending more than a thousand dollars a month to Washington. He noted that the bottom half of earners pay only about 3 percent of all federal income taxes. He said that number should be zero. In his words, "I don't want to reduce it, I want to eliminate it."
I Proposed This in July 2025
I agree. And I have agreed since July 3rd, 2025 ten months before Mr. Bezos said a word . When I published this exact proposal on my campaign website.
My plan eliminates federal income tax for every American earning $61,000 or less. The case I made then is the same case Mr. Bezos is making now. This group already carries its weight through payroll, sales and local taxes. It accounts for only 2 to 3 percent of federal income tax revenue. Forcing tens of millions of working people through an annual filing process that produces almost no net revenue is not fiscal discipline. It is waste.
The Difference: I Showed How to Pay for It
There is one difference between my proposal and his. I showed how to pay for it. My plan closes the gap by restoring the top marginal rate to its pre 2017 level and ending preferential capital gains treatment on income above one million dollars. Mr. Bezos stopped at "zero." That is the easy part. The serious part is the math and I did the math a year ago.
This Is Not a Left Idea or a Right Idea
I welcome him to the cause. When one of world's richest man persons arrives at the same conclusion as a working class Democrat in Washington State. That should tell people something. This is not a left idea or a right idea. It is common sense and it is overdue.
The Real Question
The question now is not whether the idea has merit. A billionaire just confirmed on national television that it does. The question is why the people already in office have not acted on it. Representative DelBene has held office for more than twelve years. Working families in this district are still waiting for relief this simple.
I am not waiting. This proposal is on my desk. Drafted as legislation ready to introduce. I have been making this case for a year. I will keep making it until it becomes law.
