Announcing Exploratory Committee for Washington’s 1st Congressional District

Today, I am announcing the formation of an exploratory committee to run for Congress in Washington’s 1st District.

I am a Democrat and if I run, I will likely be challenging fellow Democrat, Representative Suzan DelBene, who has held this seat for over 12 years.

The state of Washington ranks as one of the worst states to retire in. One major reason is affordability. But that won’t be a problem for Representative DelBene because like so many politicians, her net worth has skyrocketed during her time in office. In fact, according to Quiver Quantitative, it has more than doubled from $60 million to $126.34 million.

That may sound shocking, but it’s not unusual. More than half of all members of Congress are millionaires. And among the top 10 wealthiest members, Suzan DelBene is number eight.

Let me be clear: I’m not attacking people for being rich. I’d love to be rich. I have no doubt that being rich is fantastic. But here's the point: Congress no longer reflects the American people. It doesn’t look like the “government of the people, by the people, for the people” that Abraham Lincoln envisioned.

In a world where mega-corporations and the people who run them wield enormous money, power, and influence, we must remain vigilant. We must ensure that our representatives are working for us, not for corporate interests.

Many people in Washington are deeply concerned about the large donations Representative DelBene has received from corporate-affiliated political action committees (PACs). When compared to other Democrats, the amount of corporate money she’s taken is significantly higher.

So Why Run?

Why would I run for Congress? Why challenge someone from my own party?

There are two reasons: one is Representative DelBene herself, and the other is the Democratic Party as a whole. Both have been wrong on key issues that contributed to our party’s devastating loss in the last election. That loss is why Donald Trump is now president again.

If the Democratic Party doesn’t change course, then Vice President J.D. Vance could be our next president. And while we may survive another Trump term, a Vance presidency could be the point of no return. It could take generations if ever for this country to recover.

As the saying goes: “Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” Sadly, the Democratic Party hasn’t learned. Instead, it has doubled down on the very positions that cost us the trust of everyday voters.

The Issue of Fairness in Sports

One of the clearest examples is the party’s continued support for allowing biological males to compete in women’s sports. The Democratic Party is wrong on this issue. Representative DelBene is wrong on this issue. Her vote against the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act made that perfectly clear.

The reason she gave for voting against the bill was weak and politically calculated answer that insulted the intelligence of her constituents. She either supports this unfair practice or lacks the courage to oppose it. Either way, it’s unacceptable.

Most Americans including most Democrats oppose this policy. It’s unfair. It defies common sense. And it’s just plain wrong. I’ve seen the courage of female athletes who have spoken out. And have refused to compete against men.

I’ve met Democratic voters who know this is wrong but are afraid to say so. To them, I say: Your silence must end. Because fairness matters. Because women matter.

Let me be clear: this isn’t about attacking the LGBTQ+ community. Many in the LGBTO+ community feel the same way. And are against men in women's sports. One of the greatest female athletes in history. Who just happens to be a gay woman. The tennis legend Martina Navratilova , has spoken out against men in women's sports. She is a true hero , champion. A pioneer , a trailblazer . A role model and inspiration to all women. Let's close our eyes and imagine that we could go back in time. To the start of her career in sports. What if Martina Navratilova was forced to play against men calling themselves transgender? So many victories and trophies would have been stolen from her. And that would be wrong. And if a person can't understand how that would be wrong. Then that person's level of stupidity is so high. There is no reasoning with them. People keep screaming trans rights. But what about women’s rights? The rights of one group. Should not require taking away the rights of another group.

I’ve worked with transgender individuals. I’ve always treated them with dignity. And I’ll continue to do so. But respect is a two-way street.

A man taking a championship title away from a woman is not progress. It’s not a civil rights victory. It's a setback for fairness. And in many cases, it’s not even about identity it’s about exploitation.

We’ve seen a rise in people who previously identified as cross-dressers now calling themselves transgender sometimes out of strategy, not sincerity. This isn’t equality. It’s opportunism.

And while most young people are incredibly kind and open-hearted, that kindness is being taken advantage of. I once saw an interview with a mother who was upset because a male student had joined the girls' sports team and was changing in the girls locker room. Her daughter, who was uncomfortable with it, didn't want her mom to speak out because she didn't want to hurt the boy's feelings. Her daughter was changing in a different area , and not in the girls locker room. Compassion shouldn’t require young girls to give up their sports, their privacy, or their dignity.

This Is About More Than One Issue

This campaign is about more than one issue. It’s about restoring trust, protecting working families, strengthening public education, and holding both parties accountable to the people they serve.

It’s about proving that the Democratic Party can still stand for fairness, reason, and integrity.

I’m not running just to make a point. I’m running to make a difference.

1. Housing & Affordability

Her record: Has supported federal housing assistance programs but has not introduced major legislation directly aimed at reducing home prices in Washington.
My position: I support federal incentives for affordable housing construction in high cost states, plus no federal income tax for Americans earning $61,000 or less to help working families.

2. Tax Policy

Her record: Voted for the 2021 Build Back Better package, which included tax increases on high-income earners but did not lower the tax burden for middle class families in high cost areas.
My position: Pass the Real Tax Reform and Simplification Act to eliminate federal income tax for working Americans making $61,000 or less.

3. Healthcare

Her record: Supports the Affordable Care Act and a public option, but not Medicare for All.
My position: Implement a Universal Healthcare Pilot Program. A real world beta test before nationwide rollout.

4. Public Safety

Her record: Has voted for gun safety measures but not introduced legislation targeting the theft of small handguns often used in street crime.
My position: Enact Secure Storage Laws to prevent theft of high-crime firearms.

Campaign Funding

According to OpenSecrets.org, much of Suzan DelBene’s campaign funding has come from:

Real estate interests
Large PACs

I will focus on small dollar donations from individuals, so my priorities stay aligned with working families in our district.

Why This Matters in 2026

Suzan DelBene has been in Congress for over a decade. Doing that time has daily life gotten better or worse? Has crime, homelessness the drug problem. Gotten better or worst? Do you feel the Democratic Party has been going in the wrong direction? I believe it has been going in the wrong direction on some issues. I want to put it back on the right track. Do you believe Suzan DelBene is truly representing the people of district 1. Not all Democrats support forcing women to compete against men in sports.

Back in the old days, as they say, if you spoke out against a major employer, people would warn you,“Be careful this is a company town.” Well, Washington today is essentially a company state. I feel there has been a big whole in the debate on gun control policy. I feel that the focus has been on laws that will do nothing. To protect people from the daily street crime that is happening. They has never been a focus on stolen handguns. And on preventing guns from getting stolen. As you know. Home invasions and car break ins happen every day.
